What Is Radiesse?

Radiesse, which is distributed by BioForm Medical, Inc., is a soft tissue filler that is different from the hyaluronic acid fillers (RHA 2, 3, 4, & Redensity or Restylane). Radiesse is made of calcium-based microspheres (calcium hydroxlyapatite) that stimulate your skin to produce new collagen. The results are immediate and long-lasting, but not permanent.

Radiesse can be injected in smile lines, marionette lines, cheeks and used to treat facial atrophy (thinning of cheek fat). The product can last up to one year and then is reabsorbed.

What Can I Expect from the Radiesse treatment?

Before your Radiesse treatment at Mandell-Brown, the skin at and around the treatment site will be cleansed with an antiseptic. A topical anesthetic may be applied for your comfort. When beginning treatment, your plastic surgeon will use a fine needle to inject the solution below the dermis. This will provide immediate correction of the wrinkle. Your plastic surgeon may gently massage the site to ensure proper placement and contour.

Dr. Mark Mandell-Brown is a frequent speaker at national soft tissue filler training programs.

Radiesse Aftercare and Results

The advantage of Radiesse is that it requires few injection treatments and can produce the stunning result for one year and up to 14 months for some patients. Like the other dermal fillers, lumpiness, nodules, temporary bruising, or redness can result. However, side effects from Radiesse are few, short-lived and usually minimal.

Radiesse Alternatives

Other injectable fillers may produce a similar result. Dr. Mandell-Brown offers hyaluronic acid-based injectables like Restylane and RHA fillers to fill facial lines and wrinkles. Botox may be used to smooth the skin around a visible wrinkle, as well.
