Breast Ptosis: Definition, Cause and Cure

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Ptosis (pronounced “toe-sis”) is a condition characterized by breast droop and loose, stretched skin on the breasts.  The skin on a woman’s breasts is primarily responsible for maintaining their position.  When the skin becomes stretched, loose or less elastic, the breasts will droop.

Measuring Breast Ptosis

A common way to measure breast ptosis is the Regnault classification, which is as follows in simplified form:

1. Pseudoptosis – the nipple falls above the fold, but the breast is hypoplastic and hangs below the breast crease.

2. Glandular Ptosis – the nipple is above the fold, but the breast hangs below the crease.

3. Minor Ptosis – the nipple is level with the breast crease.

4. Moderate Ptosis – the nipple is below the breast crease, but above the lower breast contour.

5. Severe Ptosis: the nipple is below the breast crease and below the lower breast contour.

Causes of Breast Ptosis

In general, the cause of breast droop is a combination of factors including breast size, aging, and gravity.  Large breasts are gradually pulled downward by gravity.  As your skin becomes thinner and less elastic with age, it stretches and becomes less able to maintain a youthful breast position.

A recent study sheds light on the lifestyle factors that contribute to breast ptosis.  Plastic surgeons at the University of Kentucky found that age, significant weight loss, higher BMI, larger bra cup size, number of pregnancies, and smoking were found to be significant risk factors for breast ptosis, while “breast-feeding, weight gain during pregnancy, and lack of participation in regular upper body exercise were not found to be significant risk factors.”

Correcting Breast Ptosis

Using the classification system above, a surgeon can recommend the right procedure to correct breast ptosis.  Surgery to correct minor ptosis may be quite different from the procedure to correct a severe case of ptosis.  The usual procedure of choice is breast lift surgery / mastopexy.

Breast Surgery Workshop Hosted By Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center recently hosted the 4th annual Breast Surgery Workshop.  Sponsored through the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the nation’s largest medical society of cosmetic surgeons, the Montgomery based office held a 3 day workshop on breast augmentation, breast lift, and breast reduction surgery.

Dr Mark Mandell-Brown, course director,  noted  there were  40 cosmetic surgeons attending from throughout the United States, England, Canada, and Taiwan.  “Our breast course has earned excellent recognition and is one of the most popular breast courses in the Academy,” stated Dr Mandell-Brown.

The doctors  learn the latest development in cosmetic breast surgery.  Through a combination of lectures, surgery, and anatomy labs, the visiting physicians can improve their skills.  “Its a great way to showcase Cincinnati to our visiting doctors” observed Therese Holden, Nursing director.  She added, “we really strive to make this an outstanding educational experience for the participants.”

With a practical approach, Dr Mandell-Brown, who has been named “Top Doc” in breast augmentation in the Tri-State, emphasizes what works and enhancing patient safety.  The doctors earn continuing medical education credits approved by the Accrediation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

Mark Mandell Brown Warns Against Botox Breast Lift

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

botox_breastliftDoctor Mandell-Brown recently appeared on Local 12 to answer the question “What is a Botox Breast lift?”  You can see a video of this appearance on our media page.
The report explains that although the breast lift is common, and Botox is practical and effective, the so-called Botox Breast Lift is not a cost effective cosmetic treatment people should consider.

The most common theory behind this procedure posits that Botox injections can relax muscles and affect a woman’s posture in such a way that simulates lifting of the breasts.  Dr. Mandell Brown answers the question conclusively:

“Rather than spend four or five or ten thousand dollars on a breast lift, lets do $200-$300 of botox. Are we just throwing away the 300 dollars then? Yes. Is there any research to support that this would be even remotely effective? No. In reality, the tissue’s too heavy for that to happen.”
