Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants
Advantages of Saline Breast Augmentation Implants

Saline Breast Implant
- At this time, Saline Implants are the most commonly used type of breast implant in the United States.
- Smaller incision, since implant can be folded over and placed empty. After placement, implant is filled with saline (salt water) and the fill tube is removed.
- If saline implant leaks, the saline is reabsorbed in your body. (Patients get saline when they go to the Emergency Room for example for dehydration.)
- The saline implant can be adjusted for YOUR BODY. More or less saline can be added to one implant or both implants depending on your needs. Essentially, no two breast are identical —so saline can be added to try to make the breasts more even.
Costs: saline implants are typically half the cost of silicone implants.
Not quite as natural feeling as silicone, but when placed under the muscle, the implants look quite natural.
Advantages of Silicone Breast Implants

Cohesive Non-Bleed Silicone Gel Implant
- Most commonly used in Europe.
- Made trial attorneys very wealthy without ever proofing that the implants caused cancer, arthritis, etc. Feel more natural or” breast like” than the saline implants.
- Newer silicone implants are “Cohesive Gel”. If there is an integrity issue with the shell or covering, (if it leaks) —the implant stays together and the silicone won’t run like the very early implants in the 1960s. The cohesive gel silicone is similar to jello. If you cut jello into squares it still stays together.
- Although the silicone implants come in various sizes and shapes, they can not be adjusted individually like the silicone because they are pre-filled and sealed.
- Silicone implants are less likely to ripple compared to saline implants.
