Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Perhaps one of the most gratifying
surgeries is otoplasty or ear reshaping. Perhaps
popularized by the Walt Disney Classic “Dumbo”—large
protruding ears have been the source of ridicule
for many a child with large protruding ears
“OTO” means ear in greek.
“Plasty” means to shape or mold. So
in otoplasty surgery, the plastic surgeon makes
incisions behind the ear to pull the ear back
into position.
There are many numerous techniques
for this surgery—some aggressive in which
the cartilage itself is cut and contoured. At
the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center, we rely
on a conservative techniques that change the shape
of the ear in a natural way.
We usually recommend the surgery
before the child enters the first grade. Up until
this point, children do not seem to make an issue
of appearance. When they start attending elementary
school, some of the older students on the bus
or at school may start poking fun at the prominent
“Dumbo” ears.

Alternatively, we have many adults
who have the surgery. They respond that “it
is something they always felt self-conscious about,
but didn’t have the means to afford the
surgery.
Young or old, the ear shaping surgery
can make a big difference in how individual view
themselves.
For those with asymmetric ears,
perfect symmetry is difficult to achieve. This
can be discussed during your consultation. Computer
imaging definitely has an important role
to help decide whether surgery is for you.
