Mini Tummy Tuck

Targeting only the area below the navel, the mini tummy tuck provides a promising solution for individuals with excess skin and fat focused below the belly button. Also referred to as the partial abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck is considered a less invasive procedure compared to the full tummy tuck. Furthermore, the navel is left intact and the incision is smaller, meaning a reduced risk of visible scarring.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Mini Tummy Tuck?

The mini tummy tuck is best for those who have only a slightly protruding abdomen with a small amount of excess skin. Most often, those who undergo mini tuck surgery wish to alter the shape of their already slim midsection, or who have noticed an increase in the amount of skin around the tummy due to weight fluctuations.

As with other cosmetic procedures, it is important that those considering the mini tummy tuck demonstrate:

  • Stable weight
  • Good skin tone and elasticity
  • Realistic expectations

What is Surgery Like?

Your mini tummy tuck procedure will take place in The Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery center in Cincinnati. General anesthesia is often used for this procedure, though intravenous sedation is an option.

After the points of incision are marked and the anesthesia is administered, Dr. Mandell-Brown will place a small incision directly above the pubic region, extending from hip to hip if significant tissue
must be removed. The flap of skin is then elevated and the rectus muscles that constitute what is known as the ‘six pack’ are tightened with permanent sutures. The excess skin and fat is then advanced downward and the excess tissues are removed. Liposuction is performed, if needed, to help with excess fat removal. Finally, the incisions are closed with small sutures and drains are inserted to prevent fluid buildup.

Mini-Tuck Post-Operative Steps

The drains inserted during surgery will be removed between one to three days after the procedure. As with the full tummy tuck procedure, patients undergoing the mini tummy tuck will be given a compression garment to wear up to two to three weeks after surgery. Recovery from the mini tummy tuck should be easier than the full tummy tuck. Most patients return to work between one and three weeks. Even so, it is important that you focus on resting so that your body can heal, and that you begin ambulating (walking around) within the first 12-18 hours.
