Breast Implant Surgery Complications

Breast implants are some of the most popular and safest plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. In 2004, over 330,000 women chose to have breast implant surgery, making it the second most common type of plastic surgery. Also, of the women who chose to have breast implant surgery, over 90% would recommend the procedure to other women.

This, however, does not mean the surgery is free from risks and complications. There are several different types of complications that can develop following breast implant surgery. Capsular contracture, synmastia, rupture, infection, pneumothorax  and bottoming out are some of the breast implant complications that every patient risks having after their surgery. A capsule contracture is when thick scar tissue develops around the implant making the implant harder.  Sometime the capsule or scar tissue will squeeze the implant and distort the shape.  If a capsule forms, the doctor can remove the implant and switch tissue planes (over or under the muscle) or change the type of implant.  Synmastia is also referred to as a "uniboob" where the two separate breast pockets become one large pocket. To treat this, the implants are removed and sutures are required to reduce the pocket size.

Pneuomothorax is rare but can occur when the lung collapses during implant placement.  Treatment requires temporary placement of a chest tube to expand the lung.   If the implant becomes infected, the implant should be removed for several months before a new implant is placed.

No plastic surgeon can guarantee the results of a breast augmentation surgery because every patient and the results they want are different. There are cosmetic surgeons, like Dr. Mandell-Brown in Cincinnati, Ohio, who will do everything they can to provide the best results possible.

Questions/Comments:

"I believe that every breast augmentation surgery is a unique work of art. I work hard to provide my patients with the best results possible," says Dr. Mandell-Brown.

One of the factors that can reduce the chance of complications is attention to detail.  Those visiting this web site, seeing our facility, and meeting with Dr Mark Mandell-Brown are usually impressed with his attention to detail.  "An honest surgeon can't make guarantees to the patient, "Dr Mandell- Brown states.  "However, if a complication develops, we strive to work with the patient to try to achieve the result they desire."

Dr. Mandell-Brown works closely with his patients, "The key to a satisfied patient is good communication between the patient and the doctor." By having good communication with the plastic surgeon, there are no surprises about the breast augmentation surgery. Also, good communication will provide the cosmetic surgeon with the information to achieve the patient's goals.

Last-but-not-least, the breast  surgeon should be honest and provide information about the risks involved with breast implants. They should examine the breast tissue and let you know what implant will work best to provide the desired results.
