What is a Tummy Tuck?

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that can be helpful for men and women alike who suffer from excess skin and fat on the abdomen, and stretched abdominal muscles. The procedure is especially beneficial for those who have undergone major weight loss or pregnancy and who have a surplus of loose skin in the abdomen as a result. Going beyond the limitations of liposuction to remove excess fat alone, the tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin and tightens weak muscles.

For those who only need work in the lower abdomen, the mini tuck is an option. In this procedure, only the area from the lower abdomen to the navel is targeted. For the full tummy tuck, both the tissues above and below the navel are treated.

Who Should Consider a Tummy Tuck?

People who undergo tummy tucks often complain that their midsection will not shrink despite changes in diet and exercise. For these individuals, the biggest problem is that weight loss has resulted in a surplus of loose abdominal skin that will not shrink on its own. If you’re considering this procedure, you should be in good general health, have a stable body weight, and maintain realistic expectations about cosmetic surgery.

Among the many benefits of the tummy tuck are the following:

  • Firm abdominal skin
  • Visible muscle tone
  • Flat abdomen
  • Youthful lower abdomen and navel
tummy tucks make incision along base of abdomen, tighten muscles in vertical line, then pull skin inferiorly and suture incision

Your Tummy Tuck Consultation

During your tummy tuck consultation, your medical history will be reviewed. You will be asked about medications being taken, as well as underlying health conditions. Dr. Mandell-Brown will conduct an examination of your abdominal area to check the underlying muscles and measure the loose skin and excess fat that needs to be removed.

Dr. Mandell-Brown will then construct a surgical plan that is compatible with your medical history and cosmetic goals. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have regarding the procedure.

What to Expect During Your Tummy Tuck

This procedure will be performed at the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The procedure is most often conducted using general anesthesia, though intravenous sedation is also an option.

Once the incisions are marked and the anesthesia is administered, Dr. Mandell-Brown will make a horizontal incision that is planned to be hidden along your bikini line. At this time he will repair any weak abdominal muscles with internal sutures. The excess skin and fat are removed. For the full procedure, a new opening is made for the navel. Dr. Mandell-Brown spends significant time recreating as natural a belly button as possible. To finish your surgey, the skin is redraped and the incisions are closed with layers of dissolvable sutures.

What is Recovery Like?

Recovery from this procedure is estimated at about one to two weeks. The surgical drains will be removed within approximately one week after the surgery. Patients begin walking immediately after surgery. The elastic abdominal compression binder will be worn for several weeks following surgery.

Six weeks of avoiding strenuous activities like intense exercise and heavy lifting is recommended. You will need to come in for follow-up appointments to check the state of your tummy tuck healing process.

How Much Does a Tummy Tuck Cost?

The cost of a tummy tuck procedure will vary depending on the individualized surgical plan, which is unique to each patient’s needs and desired outcome. The overall price may be affected by various surgical fees, including anesthetic fees.
