First developed in France in 1970, liposuction has become one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery. Body liposuction is the number one requested cosmetic procedure in the United States today. It benefits individuals who have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise, but who have failed to slim down certain areas of the body such as the thighs, tummy, buttocks and arms.
By targeting these problem areas of fat, liposuction makes it possible to achieve the slimmer body you desire. Although the procedure is heralded for its success in getting rid of unwanted fat, it is not considered a weight loss solution. Liposuction cannot remove all excess fat from the body, nor is it a substitute for healthy diet and exercise.
Liposuction has changed considerably over the last forty years. Among the many liposuction methods being practiced today are the following:
- Laser-Assisted - SmartLipo
- Ultrasound-assisted liposuction - Vaser Lipo
What are the Different Liposuction Techniques?
Traditional liposuction is conducted using a small cannula attached to a vacuuming device. The cannula is inserted into stubborn fat deposits through small incisions, and is used to dislodge and suction out the fat. During the healing process, the overlying skin shrinks, and a new body contour is revealed.
Tumescent liposuction is regarded as an improved technique that allows for reduced recovery time and enhanced comfort. During the procedure, both an anesthetic agent (lidocaine) and a blood vessel constrictor (epinephrine) are injected into the treatment areas through the cannulas. This anesthetizing solution often eliminates the need for general anesthesia or other sedatives. Furthermore, the procedure causes less bleeding than traditional liposuction, which also means less swelling and chance for infection.
A relatively new liposuction tool, VASER liposelection uses UAL (Ultrasound Assisted Lipsuction) that was popular about 10 years ago. With this technique, tiny probes allow the technician to strategically deliver ultrasonic energy in the form of acoustic streaming to specific areas, dislodging fat cells.
Laser assisted liposuction is another increasingly popular form of this procedure. Examples include SmartLipo, Cool Lipo, and Slim Lipo. With a single laser fiber that is inserted into the target areas through a small cannula, the laser liposuction tool both melts fat and tightens surrounding tissue.
