There are four ways that cosmetic surgeons determine
breast implant size for the patient.
Dr 1: Knows everything and will pick the size they want for the patient.
Dr 2 : Asks the patient what size cup they want to be (B, C, or D) and promises to make the patient that size.
Dr 3: Lets the patient and an assistant look and examine the various sizes, place them in the intended bra size and goes with that implant.
Dr 4: Asks the patient to pick out photos of breast size that they desire. Using these photos as a guide the Dr uses a breast sizer in surgery and fills the sizer with air. After filling the implant, the doctor then chooses which amount of air most closely resembles the patient's photos of desired size. The sizer is removed and the closest implant is then placed and then filled with saline or the silicone gel implant closest to the sizer is selected.
At the Mandell-Brown Plastic Surgery Center, we prefer Dr 4. We feel this helps us select the breast implant size better than the others. Since bra size varies from store to store (or with the salesperson) going by cup size is not very accurate. Trying on implants helps---but the implants are over your skin and muscle. Not very realistic although it may help you get an idea of the weight of the implant. Over 95% of our patients are extremely satisfied with their breast implant size.
